Winter 2006 - StoryTelling Assignments :

The works will be presented in class with:


• an introduction (2-3Minutes)to the work,
• an explanation of the rationale for design decisions
and
• 20 to 30 minute moderated general Q&A at the end of each session.

• An example of the work to be posted on the studentWorks site under the designate 'Art of Story' w/ appropriate icon.

• Three hard copies of each assignment is required (minimum) -
one for submission, one for 'posting' and the last for personal archive.
• No longer than 20 seconds if animated.

*Hard copies evaluated for content, layout - 25%

*onLine work evaluated for content, layout - 50%

• Presentation Evaluation: Best 5 out of 6 - 25%

• 2 marks for aesthetics / creativity

• 2 marks for content

• 1 mark for presentation

1. What makes a good story.

Assignment: Adaptation of story to form.

Take a favorite short story and adapt a portion of it for production in a different medium. For stage, film, cdRom, onLine or radio.

2. Mythology/Classic stories of the gods

Assignment: Colour & Contrast : depiction of content and theme

Find a myth and depict it with shape, form, colour and contrast.
Avoid relying on text or images.

3. Children’s stories

Assignment: Typography : Portrait of a Letter

The Illuminated Letter - In the tradition of alphabet books, create a portrait of one character from any alphabet.
You may employ any media you wish : audio, text, photo, graphic, interActive or crayon.

4. Writing history as stories

Assignment: Layout & design 2 : Title page & Graphic

From any historic event, create a: Jacket and/or a title page for a book; a magazine spread or perhaps a film title sequence.

5. Dramatic forms

Assignment: Scenic structure & stage directions

Select a play, and, following the stage directions, create a 'stage setting' -
that is, a 3 dimensional space for the enactment of a production.

6. Film

Assignment: Structure, dialogue & point of view

Write a three to five page treatment for a film or video
production based on the adaptation of the first assignment.
