Winter 2002 - Assignments :

• Each assignment is worth 5 marks and is due on the week
of the date posted below.

• The works will be presented in class with an introduction to the work, an
explanation of the rationale for design decisions and 5 to 10 minute Q&A session.

• Three copies (minimum) - one for submission, one for 'posting' and
the last for personal archive.
• No longer than 20 seconds if animated.

• Evaluation:

• 2 marks for aesthetics / creativity

• 2 marks for content

• 1 mark for presentation

•The best five will comprise the final 25 marks

January 14 What makes a good story.

Assignment: Adaptation of story to form.

Take a favorite short story and adapt a portion of it for production in another medium. For stage, film, cdRom, onLine or radio.

January 21 Mythology/Classic stories of the gods

Assignment: Colour & Contrast : depiction of content and theme

Find a myth and depict it with shape, form, colour and contrast.
Avoid relying on text or images.

January 28 Children’s stories

Assignment: Typography : Portrait of a Letter

In the tradition of alphabet books, create a portrait of one character from any alphabet. You may employ any media you wish : audio, text, photo, graphic, interActive or crayon.

February 4 Writing history as stories

Assignment: Layout & design 2 : Title page & Graphic

From any historic event, create a: splash screen;
title page for a book; magazine spread
or film title sequence.

February 11 Dramatic forms

Assignment: Scenic structure & stage directions

Select a play, and, following the stage directions, create a 'stage setting' - that is, a 3 dimensional space for the
enactment of a production.

February 18 Film

Assignment: Structure, dialogue & point of view

Write a three to five page treatment for a film or video
production based on the adaptation of the first assignment.
